Winter is my favorite season because of the cold weather, Christmas vacations, and of course, the SNOW! The fluffy white snow calls for a ton of fun and play, and if there’s one thing I’ve always wanted to try, it was snowboarding. However, we all know just how much work it takes to begin learning how to snowboard, which makes you wonder: What can you do to start?

You’re probably wondering: Why bother trying out snowboarding in the first place? Instead of just choosing to watch it, here are the reasons why you should consider trying the sport out:

For starters, it’s one of the most fun cardio workouts you can do, burning a LOT of calories! It’s an aerobic exercise, so you get to stay in shape and improve fitness levels without even feeling like you’re burning those calories. Better than using the treadmill and feeling like a hamster!
2. Better Balance and Flexibility
When you’re standing and moving on the snowboard, you need balance, which exercises both mind and body. Furthermore, the sport involves having to change pace and direction using your entire body. This doesn’t only improve your balance, but how flexible your muscles and joints are as well.
3. A Mood Enhancer
Like all exercises, snowboarding can pump up those endorphins and have you feeling great. This is natural mood enhancer not only because of the exercise itself but because of the environment you’re in. With the beautiful surroundings and adrenaline rush, I’m sure it helps keep positive outlooks and lessen stress.
4. Improves Your Core and Strength
Snowboarding utilizes almost all the muscles in the body, also involving you using your core muscles around the midriff. With a stronger core, you’ll be even less prone to injury when playing other sports. It also improves your overall strength in your daily life.
5. Helps With Self-Confidence
You’ll need to go further with snowboarding, both in height and speed, a huge feat. This seems daunting but once you get past that, it raises your confidence and has you feeling like you can break borders and reach goals in the snow! After all, who can say that they can do tons of tricks and jump great heights without much of the scare?
9 Tips For Snowboarding: Beginner’s Guide
Now that you know all about the different benefits snowboarding has to offer, how can you properly begin learning it? These are my top nine tips based on how I managed to learn the sport:
1. Learn How to Skate First
This is one of the most important tips to follow first, as you’ll need to learn how to learn the posture. While it’s possible to learn on the snowboard the first time, it’s recommended to learn to share first and know the basics. This can help strengthen your body and have you learn what to expect when on the actual snowboard.
Besides this, you should also learn how to get on and off the ski lifts smoothly, whether on a snowboard or not.
2. Taking Proper Lessons
Sure, you can read up on tips like these or search online for tutorials, but it’s way different learning it in real life. I recommend that you take at LEAST one lesson, better if you can take more, which can teach you the following:
- The safe and proper technique
- Feedback on what you’re doing right and what to improve on
- Where to begin and to learn all the basics before you progress
Professionals can make sure you’re safe and prevent any accidents or injuries from happening.
3. Remember to Bend Your Knees
Regardless of whether you’re taking lessons professional or from family and friends, it’s important to bend your knees. This is the most common reason why beginners fall, especially on difficult terrains. You’re either not bending the knees or not bending it enough!
Bend your knees but do NOT squat, and this will help absorb bumps better. Yes, be open to falls and don’t feel ashamed, but avoid falling because you’re too upright. Be conscious and keep the knees bent.
4. Ride the Slope and Watch Out
Many beginners tend to get out of control, building up on speed to the point they can’t stop. This either has them crash to stop, or involuntarily. So if you ride across a slope, don’t go straight down and naturally check the speed.
Also always be wary of your surroundings and know where you want to go. Wherever you’re looking is where you’ll be, twisting your body to change directions. That’s when you should also be wary o your positioning and direction, which keeps the ride smooth.
5. Have the RIGHT Gear That FITS
It’s crucial to have the right gear as well, because how will you be able to learn with a snowboard that doesn’t fit you? Make sure that you know the type of snowboard you need according to your skill level and body size.
Furthermore, suit up and dress according to the weather, having snowboard boots, having protective gear such as helmets, crash pads, and safety goggles. This prevents you from freezing over while keeping you safe from inevitable slips and falls.
6. Make a Proper Training Plan
When you have a plan, you can progress even quicker and with efficiency. It allows you to know what goal you have to accomplish today and what new things to try, knowing what you can improve rather than staying at one level.
Try to plan from the beginning, such as mastering basic moves, slowly progressing every few days until you can go to more advanced skillsets. Focus on what YOU think is fun for YOU and have the progression make sense, going gradually than going straight to the hard stuff.
7. Know When to Train and Stay Warm
Nobody’s having fun while they’re freezing over, nor should you consider snowboarding during extremely inclement weather. Suit up according to the temperature and wear layers that stay breathable and well-ventilated.
Furthermore, know when it’s time to skip your snowboarding days, especially when it looks like it’s a blizzard coming your way! You won’t want to end up getting into risky accidents or even getting lost because of the weather. Also, just like any other exercise, if you’re feeling too pooped after your first few tries, get some rest in-between days.
8. Progress From the Bunny Slope Quickly
I don’t recommend that you progress too quickly and early, which can affect your technique negatively. But one thing’s for certain: I suggest that you go to other easier beginner’s train other than the bunny slope.
While it’s a great way to learn as a fresh beginner, you need to move on from that area quickly, as there are a LOT of other beginners who may end up skiing or snowboarding with the chance of hitting you. This makes it difficult for you to gain rhythm, to the point you feel too frustrated.
9. Have Fun and Stay Safe!
Last but not least, focus on having fun rather than feeling discouraged if you don’t get things right the first time! Let everything be a learning process and take each fall and accomplishment as a lesson.
Also, don’t forget to think safety first, going with a trusted and skilled family or friends while skating. Wait for the RIGHT type of snowfall and learn all about the different trails, knowing the signages.
